When a person burns wood that contains poison ivy it burns its harmful substances into the air. When its occurs the person inhales the poison and is subject to hospitalization.

There are a few lucky people that will never contract poison ivy no matter their exposure to it. However, these people are rare and considered to be immune to it. These people need to be aware that their immunity can change at any given time, especially with age; people may grow out of their immunity to the disease.

The itching of the effects of poison ivy can be too unbearable to live with at times. It also spreads rapidly over your entire body. Therefore, even if it starts in one small area of your body you will want to be extremely cautious that you do not let it spread.

The number thing an infected person will want to avoid is taking a warm shower. This is because warm water causes your pores to open and poison ivy contains harmful oils in which it infects the body. With all of the pores to the body open the oils can spread rather quickly. What you do want to do instead to rub alcohol over the infected area in order to kill off the harmful oils. However, you are only allotted a six hour window in which this is possible. After this six hour period all of the oils have already soaked into the skin and you will no longer have the opportunity to kill it.

The most severe cases can last three week at most. However, more mild cases can last only a maximum of one week. Over the counter drugs are available in which to treat these mild cases and symptoms. Also, prescription medication is available for the more intense cases where over the counter is simply not enough. This can be extremely beneficial when over the counter medication is not enough to ease the pain.

Overall, poison ivy is something that wants to be avoided at all costs. However, if it does occur you should always want to be informed as to how to handle the situation. Also, you should want to know exactly what to avoid so as not to make it worse.
