The exotic type that you may have seen in the stores is known as odontoglossums. These are very delicate looking flowers and many people\'s favourite type. They are better grown outdoors as they prefer cooler temperatures.

The dendrobiums are harder to grow. If they are done right, they produce beautiful flowers in many colours. High temperatures are best for them in the summer, and cool but dry temperatures for the winter. Beginners should stay away from this as they can be challenging to maintain.

Couple of things you should remember after choosing which orchid you want to grow. It\'s important to prune them when they flowered so it encourages new growth. It will make the plant bloom more regularly.

Pruning has to be done only at certain times. You cannot prune orchids when they are flowering. So for most plants winter is the time to cut back some of the plant to help it stay healthy and grow. Make sure to get the right pruning tools for this job otherwise you will end up damaging the plant.
