If you have a compression faucet, it will have two handles - one for the hot water and one for the cold water. In order to control the pressure of your water, compression faucets use a system of seals and washers.

The working mechanism of compression type faucets is just very simple. But these posses rubber o- rings that tend to wear and tear with time. Washers in the hot water tap tend to wear out before those in the cold water tap.

Fixing the leaky faucet is easy and you can accomplish this task in the following few steps. Shut off the water going to your faucet by turning off the sink\'s shut off valve. This should be located underneath the sink. If you can\'t find it, you can shut off the main water supply to your house. Also, remove the fancy plastic caps.

Take your crescent wrench and remove the packing nut. Doing so, you can now easily pull out the stem. Some type of faucets consists of stem threaded in the faucet. Just rotate the stem in anti- clockwise direction and remove it completely.

There must be a rubber washer at the end of the stem. Just locate that. The washer may be held in place with a small screw; if so, remove the screw.

On finding the worn out washer, replace it with the new one. One can easily find these rubber washer from the nearby home improvement store.

If replacing the washer could not work in setting right the faucet, take a look at the valve seat, which is the hole where the stem assembly sits. A rusted valve seat should be replaced. You will need a special seat wrench to take out the seat.

Place back all the parts of the faucet that you have removed for the repairs. Make sure, you place them in the right order. Lastly, change the position of the shut off valve to ON position. See no leaks; you are done with the repairing. You may need to call in the plumber if leak continues.
