Gardening Tools (Welcome Books: Tools)
What does a pencil, a doctor's stethoscope, and a shovel have in common? They're all tools! This series shows young readers how they work, who uses them, and how to choose the right tool for the job.
The Zen Of Gardening In the High & Arid West: Tips, Tools, and Techniques
Drawing from his own considerable gardening experience and expertise, as well as leaning on the wisdom of the people he calls "The Zen Masters of the Western Garden," David Wann gathers a mix of stories, how-to advice, and simple, doable projects that are ideal for gardeners in the high and arid landscapes of the West. The Zen of Gardening in the High and Arid West is a friendly and invaluable guide to such topics as strategic gardening (how to coax fruits and vegetables from a sun-parched garden), pest-proof planting (how to protect those disappearing bulbs), choosing the right varieties of edibles for the region (apples, snow peas, tomatoes, etc.), how to become a seed-starting maniac, a Farmer's Almanac approach to gardening (plant peas when the first cottonwood leaves appear!), as well as profiles of colorful local gardens and gardeners.

For gardeners of the high plains and mountains who are "meteorologically and topographically challenged," who routinely grapple with wild weather swings, high elevations, and scarcity of water, Wann offers inspiration and invaluable practical advice for success in the garden. Wann also shows how gardening can offer "a Zen exercise in mindfulness, discipline, and the joy of being right in the moment."

This book is the single best resource for gardners in Colorado, especially those who lean organic, as I do. It is a book with passion, integrity, and common sense. I had the pleasure of meeting David at a small speaking engagement last year, and he is everything one would expect. I am shocked that there aren't more reviews here for this masterpiece. Gardening here can be hard, especially if one doesn't want to enrich corporate giants who use synthetic chemicals to force things. This book got me through some very discouraging gardening frustrations -- it kept my passion alive and my fingernails dirty. Get this book!!!! If your heart is in the soil, this book will become a very good friend.
Garden Tools (Everyday Things)
Garden tools are inseparable from gardens, and yet, while the history of gardens has been exhaustively explored, the story of garden tools has been virtually ignored - until now. As authors Suzanne Slesin and Guillaume Pellerin reveal in this lushly designed and nostalgia-filled volume, embedded in these familiar, everyday tools is a rich history that documents the tastes and passions of gardeners through the ages. Illustrated with hundreds of full-color photographs of garden tools, as well as with vintage lithographs, engravings, posters, ads, and even decorative plates depicting garden implements, the book follows the gardening cycle, from "Preparing the Earth" to "Harvesting", and each chapter features the traditional tools used in that phase of gardening. The "Sowing" chapter, for instance, presents an array of dibbers, trowels, seeders, and terra-cotta pots, while the "Pruning" chapter offers a host of knives, grafters, pincers, saws, scythes, hatchets, billhooks, and a mind-boggling variety of pruners. Today, vintage garden tools are being rediscovered and appreciated anew as much for their ingeniousness as for their sculptural and timeless form. Garden Tools casts these humble objects in a whole new light, and anyone who loves to dig a spade into the earth or prune a rosebush will find the book irresistibly compelling.

The Tool Book: A Compendium of Over 500 Tools and How to Use Them
The Garden Writers Association of America declared it best book of the year for 1998. And The New York Times wrote: "Logan, who is one of our best garden writers, has produced not only a real book but a scrupulously researched, handsomely designed, and highly enjoyable one to book."

The Tool Book celebrates garden tools in all their pleasure, practicality, variety, beauty, ingenuity, simplicity, and purity. Thirteen chapters and over 70 striking full-color photographic spreads-obsessive and obsessively informative-present hundreds of tools organized by task: 22 shovels, 21 spades, 12 trowels, 16 hoes, 11 weeders, 19 hand pruners, 10 pruning saws. In addition to garden tool necessities, here are knives, axes, hooks, watering cans, rakes, riddles, brooms, wheel barrows, shears, and scoops, and much more. There are tools to start the garden from seed in the spring, tools to keep it growing and healthy all summer, and tools clean up in the fall. And, finally, tools to care for the tools.

In addition, the the book presents a detailed overview of the marriage of tool to type of work-how garden tools evolved, how to use each type of tool properly, and what to look for in a tool. It's the right tool for the right job.
I purchased this book for a design class where we were making gardening tools to get a better knowledge of the products, and let me tell you it was worth it. This book goes very in depth with not only how the tool is used but how it should be made and the "rituals" surrounding each tool. Also, although I'm not a gardener myself, I could see this book being an invaluable reference or even as a great guide to those just starting out in the gardening world.

Questions and Answers

gardening tools?
hey there! i have recently developed an interest in gardening. I am a dimwitt as far as gardening is concerned, please help me to 1- collect gardening tools(basic) 2-flowers and plants. how to get and sow them.
Answer:
Ok... First, basic garden tools.... You will need..... *Spade *Trowel (I prefer the narrow, transplanter trowel) *Cultivator *Garden gloves (water proof, preferably) Optional.... *Knee cushion *Pruning Sheers *Bucket/basket to carry supplies around in *Hand rake The tools you need will depend on what you plan to do, really. Here are some websites that tell a little about gardening tools.... http://www.thegardenhelper.com/tools.html http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=howTo&p=LawnGarden/GardenToolBG.html http://www.doityourself.com/stry/toolbasics4gardens Next, your plants.... You have three choices: 1. Seed 2. Bulb 3. Potted plants For instant results, nothing beats the potted plant! But... Nothing beats seed if you are wanting to stay on the economical side! ...Why not a combination, a few plants, and several packets of seed? =) You can get seeds online, in garden shops (local nurseries, Walmart, Kmart, even the Dollar Stores)... Some grocery stores carry seeds. What type of flowers/plants you choose really depends upon your preference. As for flowers that are easy to start from seed, I would recommend Marigold, Zinnias, Pansies and Petunias. You may want to choose a combination of flowers, foliage plants (Hostas, Caladium, Ferns, etc), herbs and even veggies if you'd like. A couple of websites to get some tips and ideas.... Gardening can be addictive... =)
