Fighting Against The Roof Mold

Sometimes you might have detected the presence of black or white stains on your asphalt shingles. Often, these hideous stains are the unwanted deposits of mold on your roof. You can try to remove these spots yourself without seeking any professional guidance. Follow simple procedure to make your shingles mold free.

Choose the best time to carry out the job of removing the mold. Often, the commercially available chemicals serve the required purpose. Hence, choose the time that complements the efficiency of the chemicals in the best way. Normally, the cloudy day is considered the most suitable for such an application. Avoid using a power washer as that could roughen up the surface of the shingles.

To start with, make a combination of 1 qt. bleach, cup tri-sodium phosphate. Mix it with 1 gallon of lukewarm water. Put the solution into the pump style garden sprayer. Now, shake the sprayer thoroughly to mix the ingredients well.

Once the chemical is prepared, climb up to the roof and observe the affected area. Make sure that the ladder doesn\'t shake or wobble. You can seek the help of another person to hold the ladder in place.

Now, carefully spray the cleaning solution onto the molded shingles. As a precautionary step for the future, you may spray this solution on the entire roof. Let the solution remain on the roof for 15 to 20 minutes for best results.

After the time is over, wipe out the cleaning solution using your garden hose pipe. Rinse off the roof in a proper manner to completely remove the mold residual from the asphalt shingles.

If still you feel the presence of some stubborn mold left on the roof then use the mixture of 1 gallon warm water with copper sulfate. Spray the solution on the molded shingles and rinse off the roof thoroughly to remove the remaining mold. By this time, all the mold spots would have disappeared from your roof.

As a precautionary step, use rubber gloves, long pants and full sleeve shirts while doing this task. The chemicals may lead to eye irritation or skin allergies.
