Dyeing Flowers For Colorful Bouquets And Floral Projects
Dyeing flowers is nothing new- you've likely already seen the effects of this long-practiced art style. If you've seen a black rose, you have seen the effects of black dye on a white rose. Dyeing flowers is generally quite easy and inexpensive.
A clean flower is imperative when you go about the process of dyeing a flower. If you have even the slightest bit of dirt or grime on the flower, and intend on using a painting method, you could easily ruin the surface of the paint with imperfections. It's very similar to cleaning walls before painting rooms in your house; use warm water and scrub lightly.
Using spray paint is easy, as it allows for a quick application and a broad coverage area. Spray paint can be toxic, and can damage your flower if you don't obtain the right kind. Look for a brand that is non-toxic, and is organic so that there won't be interaction with the flower. A dead flower will quickly decay- backtracking your hard work!
Application of dye directly is a good way to create custom designs. The best dye for this occasion is your average food coloring dye- which should already be safe to the plant and ready to go. You may use a small paintbrush to apply the dye if you are making an intricate design. Brush up on your color mixing skills if you need to make different shades of colors or new colors entirely.
You may also put dye directly into a vase with a small amount of water. Put the flower in, and it will naturally take the dye through its system. Be sure to cut the end of the stem first so the flower is able to take in the water and dye more quickly. In a short amount of time you should see the dye starting to have an effect on the stem, bloom, and leaves of the flower.
When your efforts are going toward a gift, or a design for a special occasion, you may want to instead take a look at paints designed specifically for flowers. These paints have all the benefits of being easy to use and looking great, but they also carry a higher price tag. The trade off is acceptable if you are intending on setting the mood for a special occasion, but for the average art project, the trade off may not be so great.
Final Thoughts
Flowers already have an elegance all their own. Adding your own color and creativity to flowers can expand upon their already stunning appearance. You will find that once perfect, your skills will be put to use for weddings, anniversaries, graduations, and other celebrations.
