Surprisingly, many people don't even know that growing tomatoes from seeds is still done. Just about any plant variety can be found in it's seed form at garden stores. Growing from seeds is not that hard and the plants are equally as healthy and beautiful as buying seedlings and transplanting them.

The first thing you need to do in order to start growing your own tomatoes from seeds is to figure out where you are going to place them. Areas like window sills or outside balconies are best in the beginning. Some type of planting tray is needed to put the seeds in and you need to evenly space them throughout the tray. You will need warm conditions for the best results so the window sill is ideal. If you are worried about the soil drying out to quickly from all the sunlight you can cover the tray with plastic wrap at this time.

In only about eight weeks your seeds will have grown an average of at least a few inches. At this point you will need to transplant them into bigger containers and separate them if you need to. Be extremely careful when transplanting at this age though because the seedlings will be very delicate and can break easily.

Once you have decided on the new containers you will fill them with new soil and dig a big enough hole for the plants to be placed in. Once you have the plant dropped into the hole you will fill it in with more soil and press down lightly to support the roots. The seedlings will need to be placed back into the sunlight and given plenty of water after this to continue growth.

After the seedlings have reached a height of about 6 to 7 inches you will need to transplant them again to a bigger container. Once you have done this you can place them outside if you need to. Having exposure to the outdoor elements will help harden the seeds.

As long as you notice the plants starting to sprout a good amount of leaves and you are providing the needed sunlight and warmth they will continue to grow at a rapid pace at least a few more inches. This is when it will be time for one last transplanting. This last transplant will be done a bit differently though. When you bury the roots you will need to place the plant deep enough to cover everything except about four of the leaves that will be left above ground. Doing this at this age will help the roots to gain strength and produce a better fruit bearing plant.

A strong tomato plant will have the ability to stand while the fruits add a lot of extra weight. Weak plants can't handle this weight so they will fall over letting the fruits touch the ground. One they touch the ground they will begin to rot. Make sure you give the plants a lot of sun, a lot of warmth and a lot of water an take care during transplanting so you do not damage them.

The ability to grow healthy tomato plants that produce a lot of beautiful fruit is an easy way to get your family eating healthier. Homegrown tomatoes do not have all the chemicals that are found on commercial grown varieties. They know when there are too many of them and they will eat the young or control the breeding in other ways. If you do all you can to give your fish a good milieu, they will do the rest.
